Stamped Sidewalks didn't start as a website. The craft comes from a Twin Cities sign shop — Dimension Sign, formerly Fourth Dimension Signs — that has cut concrete stamps since the early years of Saint Paul's Sidewalk Poetry program. That program — created and run by Public Art Saint Paul with the City of Saint Paul since 2008 — has pressed 1,400+ stamps into the city's sidewalks and put a poem within a ten-minute walk of every resident; ours have been among its tools since its early years. Over the years the same shop machined stamps for city poetry and public-art programs in 17 states, coast to coast. Stamped Sidewalks is that business, given its own name, its own online designer, and its own front door — the same machines, the same Minnesota-made precision.
What we make hasn't changed: a thick, rigid plastic plate with your words carved into its face by a computer-guided cutting machine — the same way we've cut architectural signs for decades. Press it into wet concrete, lift it away, and the words stay. Stamps we cut 20 years ago are still in use, and the concrete they pressed is still going strong.
